{Round 3, board 2, time control 40/90 and game/30. This win made my score an unexpected 3-0, but I lost 2 of my mext 3 games and finished 4-2 in the championship. At this time the Pasadena Chess Club was meeting in an assisted living facility on Del Mar, while the Pasadena Senior Center was being rebuilt.}
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 g6 {The highly unusual Smyslov/Barnes Defence.} 4. O-O Bg7 5. c3 d5 $2 {An unusual variation on the already unusual defence. 5... d6; 5... a6; 5... Nge7 are all more common, and probably better.} 6. d4 {Opening the center is suggested by the fact that White's King is safely tucked away while Black's King is not.} 6... exd4 7. Nxd4 Ne7 $2 $16 {Black's position is already quite bad and White is probably already winning. Better is 7... Bd7 and both of the games I see from here were drawn.} 8. Bg5 {The game Oleksienko (2207) - Eryomenko (2152) , Lvov 2001, continued 8. exd5 Qxd5 9. Nxc6 Qxd1 10. Nxe7+
Bd7 11. Rxd1 Bxb5 12. Nd5 O-O-O 13. Ne3 Rxd1+ 14. Nxd1 Rd8 15. Ne3 and White's extra piece won the game eventually.} 8... f6 {My idea was 8... O-O 9. Nxc6 (9. Bxc6 f6 10. Bxd5+ Nxd5 11. exd5 fxg5 12. Nb3 is also OK for White but I like the other line better) 9... bxc6 10. Bxc6 Rb8 11. Bxd5 Rxb2 12. Bb3 leaving me a pawn up and his Rook trapped on b2.} 9. exd5 Qxd5 10. Nxc6 Qxb5 $4 {10... bxc6 11. Qxd5 Nxd5 12. Bxc6+ $18; 10... Qxg5 11. Qd8+ Kf7 12. Qxe7+ Kg8 13. Bc4+ $18; 10... fxg5 11. Qxd5 Nxd5 12. Nb4+ c6 13. Nxc6 O-O 14. Nd4 $16; 10... Qxd1 11. Nxe7+ Bd7 12. Rxd1 Bxb5 13. Re1 fxg5 14. Nxg6+ Kf7 15. Nxh8+ Bxh8 $18 The last line is a theme very similar to the theme in the Oleksienko - Eyomenko game cited above.} 11. Qd8+ {Even the strongest players occasionally just blunder and this time it was Karl's turn. He had completely overlooked this move until I did it, at which point he laughed and played a few more moves. But even if he had seen this coming and avoided it, it is unlikely he could have avoided a losing game in any case, as the notes above suggest. The rest of the moves are all forced.} 11... Kf7 12.
