Gregg Fritchle, joint winner of the Oak Tree Open.
The Oak Tree Open took place from July 15 to August 19 and produced a three-way tie for first place. Congratulations to Craig Faber (2161),
Jesse Victoria (2079) and Gregg Fritchle (2069) who all scored 5/6.
Three players shared places 4-6. Melandro Singson (2184), Mike Carlson (2112) and Matthew Hayes (2034) scored 4.5/6 to finish just behind the
leaders.
As usual, there were a variety of shock results to report, starting with Hayes' first round draw against Jeffrey Schwartz (1542), in a game he
was actually lucky to draw after an unsound piece sacrifice. Mike Carlson had a similar fate in round 1 as he could only draw with Cory Chen (1568).
There were big rating gaines for Allen Qiu (81 points), Raphael Manahan (53 points), and Danny Soong Jr. (67 points). Top of the pile was Jeffrey
Chou, who went from 1510 to 1614, a very impressive increase of 104 points. Congratulations, Jeffrey!
A new tournament, the Bill Smith Open, starts Monday, August 26.
