The Oak Tree Open continued last night and round 3 brought yet more upsets and more misery for the pre-tournament favorites. Gregg Fritchle (2034) was held to a draw on board 1 by Alexander Xie (1944). On board 2, Wendell Salveron (1937) took down Matthew Hayes (2017), and Phil Chase (1913) had a nice draw against Jesse Victoria (2082). More upsets were to follow as Ed Sanjenis (2040) hung a piece in a dominant position against Anthony Hung (1898) and had to take a draw by perpetual check. Eren Karadayi (1806) secured an excellent victory over Dave Matson (2008) and David Argall's (2026) difficult tournament got worse as he lost to Michael Bond (1618) in the Game of the Week.

James Marshall (1429) may not have won a game yet but is having arguably the tournament of his life thus far. After three rounds James has three draws, all against opponents rated considerably higher than him. James' draws in the first two rounds were against Dane Hinrichsen (2000) and Stephanie Shao (1663). In round 3, he continued his impressive run by drawing Melvin Bond (1723). James is up over 50 rating points currently; not bad without winning a game!

On the lower boards newcomer Cory Chen (nr) earned his first win at Arcadia Chess Club by beating Abinanda Mukundan (1167). Melvin Asuncion (nr) had an excellent win over Roy Schmidt (1494) on board 23 and, in yet another upset, Daniel Zhou (1339) secured a victory vs Tony Grauso (1664) on board 18.

The chess club will be closed Monday, September 5 for Labor Day. The Oak Tree Open will resume Monday, September 12. Will the upsets continue in round 4?!
